Meet Ann-Marie Downing

My Story

Four years ago, our grown son had invited my husband and me to move to Chicago. This was a major transition for my husband and I since we had never moved from the state, we both were born in. I was retired from a career as a special education teacher and a reading interventionist, and our three children had lives and families of their own. I was searching for a new life purpose, and what made this harder was living in a new environment without friends or familiar resources that had been anchors before. Now, I have been untethered from them.

My emotions came to the surface during this time, and I discovered I hid them for years because my life had been very busy. This happens to many of us who live and operate in a state of semi-unconsciousness. I realized I had little or no awareness of who I was and how was I going to determine how I wanted to spend my retirement years. I was told by my physician “these are your bonus years so enjoy them and live with vigor and purpose.”

After spending quiet, a bit of time not focusing on the negativity within my inner world, I decided to focus on visualizing the direction in which my mind will connect to my heart and become open to the flow motion of life. I got involved in many volunteer organizations all which focus on the health, education, and overall well-being of children. The vision of becoming a parent coach was  unleashed from my being and my dance with this paradigm became clear to me. This is where my unique mission begins, and it has allowed me to walk along this path of self-discovery.

Please allow me to walk along your path with you and together we will discover your inner strength of hope, resilience, and courage. The continued unfolding of your insights and the expansion of your heart space will direct you to have more authentic relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and yourself.

"I highly recommend Ann-Marie Downing’s presentation “Celebrating Healthy Boundaries Between Parents and their Adult Children.” Boundaries is a delicate and challenging issue for so many people, especially women. This workshop offered insights, guidance and specific instructions of how to carefully establish healthy boundaries to create productive relationships. Ann-Marie is an extremely knowledgeable and empathetic coach, as well as a engaging presenter. She not only offered a compelling presentation, but later generously provided an abundance of follow-up materials that I have found useful when dealing with other relationships as well."
— Pat A.
“Ann Marie’s presentation on Boundaries with Adult Children was excellent. She was well prepared and developed an empathic approach to the content. She used her own personal experiences and humor to highlight important principles. With such a sensitive subject, these strategies put us at ease and able to listen. During the Q&A, she deftly navigated through very personal territory with warmth and wisdom.”

— Maeve B.

"The talk about boundaries with adult children for the TTN was a great presentation. The topic is a tough one, but you made it easy to understand and gave us practical and useful advice. The use of everyday examples helped us understand how to tackle common issues effectively and thoughtfully and the metaphors helped us grasp the concepts. The hour went by really fast and the number of questions and discussion that followed showed how engaging your presentation was."
— Sujatha
Ann-Marie led a 3-part SEL series within our Chicago Foundation of Education Community Chat program this spring. Dozens of Chicago-area educators and educator professionals registered to attend these thoughtful sessions around "lightening your emotional backpack," "the art of saying no" and "dancing with one's emotions."Ann-Marie was well organized throughput the series, always arriving ahead of the attendees with her slide deck in order. The presentations were relevant, clear, and each session was underscored by Ann-Marie's passion for and belief in the material. Her enthusiasm was infectious, from start to finish! I would highly recommend Ann-Marie as a large group speaker or small group leader; we were delighted to have her with us for a few evening this year and we hope she will return in this capacity down the line.
